MVCSD Makes Adjustments to the End of the Year Calendar
Each year, school districts in Iowa are required to offer a minimum of 1080 hours of instruction. Typically, Mount Vernon builds additional hours into the school calendar to account for time missed because of inclement weather and other issues that may impact the total hours of instruction. This year, we started one week late due to the impact of the August storm. Additionally, we lost instructional hours due to inclement weather that led to several cancellations, delays, or early releases. The total impact of these factors has led the District to be 4.16 hours short of the required 1080 hours of instruction. In order to make up this deficit in instructional hours, the following changes are being made to the calendar:
- The early release day currently scheduled for May 12, 2021, will now be a full day of instruction with a 3:15 p.m. dismissal.
- The last day of school on May 27, 2021, will now be a full day of instruction with a 3:15 p.m. dismissal.
These two changes will ensure that we surpass the minimum requirement of 1080 hours. Thank you for your flexibility as we make these changes to the end of the year calendar. Now, let’s hope there are no freak April blizzards coming our way.
